Introducing the LGND API

Noam

3 min. read

Today, we're launching the LGND API – a tool to search satellite and aerial imagery the way you'd search the web. Simply send a natural language query or a coordinate to the service and receive answers instantly. No model training required.

Normally, finding features of interest on Earth (e.g. every solar farm in Nevada) meant either hiring data scientists to train custom models or analysts to manually comb through maps.  Neither works when you need answers fast, especially on a global scale.

Traditional computer vision can also be limited in their field of view. A school and a factory can both have grey roofs — but only one has basketball courts and a playground out front. LGND’s technology ensures context-awareness when analyzing an image.

Our Solution

LGND is built on a technology called geo-embeddings — compact numerical representations of what's in a multispectral image (you can check out our previous post on geo-embeddings here). By comparing geo-embeddings, rather than pixels, LGND can scan millions of square kilometers in milliseconds. Geo-embeddings are inherently multi-purpose, meaning you don't need large labeled datasets or custom models for different features. One embedding holds all the information needed to distinguish a tailing pond from an electrical substation.

The LGND API gives you three core capabilities:

  1. Create embeddings — Trace your feature of interest on a map or enter a text prompt, and LGND generates a corresponding geo-embedding with state-of-the-art Large Earth Observation Models (LEOMs) like Clay.
  2. Search for similarity — Run optimized similarity search against our global embedding database — regularly maintained and updated by LGND — to find locations that match your reference.
  3. Fetch source imagery — Pull the satellite imagery behind any result, so you can verify findings and build downstream workflows.

By using LGND, you’re spared the hassle of image preprocessing, model management, embedding inference and global-scale vector similarity search.

Built for Real-World Use Cases

LGND’s API is already powering applications across industries:

  • Carbon: Measuring above-ground biomass in forests.
  • Insurance: Map structure damage and model community-level risk.
  • Maritime: Detect vessels, ports and offshore-wind.
  • Energy: Track solar arrays, wind farms and oil rigs.
